How we research, score and correct

Short version: official sources first, every page dated, opinions labelled as opinions, and quick corrections when we get something wrong.

Where our facts come from

Age ratings come from the official PEGI database and the UK App Store and Google Play listings. Parental control steps come from each platform's own support pages: Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam, Apple, Google, Roblox and Epic Games. Prices, currencies and features come from official publisher pages or store listings. UK context comes from bodies such as the Video Standards Council, Ofcom and GOV.UK.

Every guide lists the sources it was checked against, with the date of the check. If we could not confirm something from an official source, we leave it out rather than guess.

What we do not claim

Our guides are compiled from documented features and official settings. We do not present them as reviews based on our own play or as lab tests, and we do not publish star ratings or scores dressed up as measurements.

How the Parent Check dials work

Each game guide opens with five dials, scored from 1 (low concern) to 5 (high concern):

  • Contact with strangers: whether a child can chat with, or be contacted by, people they don't know, and how easily that can be switched off.
  • Pressure to spend: virtual currencies, time-limited shops, battle passes and paid random items.
  • Violence & scary bits: based on the PEGI rating and its content descriptors.
  • "Just one more" pull: daily rewards, streaks, seasons and match structures that make stopping harder.
  • Content made by other players: how much of what a child sees is created by other users rather than the developer.

The dials are an editorial view, based on those documented features. Each dial comes with a one-line reason, so you can see why we scored it that way and make your own call.

Keeping pages up to date

Games and platforms change their shops, ratings and settings regularly. In 2026 alone PEGI changed how it rates games with paid random items, Roblox introduced new account types, and Apple reorganised its parental controls. We re-check pages when we learn of a change, and the "Checked" date on each page shows the last full check.

Corrections

If you spot an error, email us with the page and what you're seeing. We aim to review reports within a few working days. When we correct a fact we update the page and its check date.

Independence

No game company, console maker or app store pays us, reviews our pages before publication or supplies copy. We don't accept free games or hardware in exchange for coverage. We do not use official logos, box art or screenshots: all illustrations on this site are our own.
