Grand Theft Auto V: a calm guide for UK parents

Grand Theft Auto V is an adults-only crime game with a large online mode, GTA Online, built in. If it has come up at school, here's what PEGI says about it and how to keep it off your child's console.

PEGI 18
  • Contact with strangers
High. GTA Online public sessions mix players who don't know each other; chat is controlled at console level.
  • Pressure to spend
High. Shark Cards turn real money into GTA$, spent on cars, property and casino chips; GTA+ is monthly.
  • Violence & scary bits
Very high. PEGI cites graphic violence including torture, killing innocent characters, drug use and sexual scenes.
  • "Just one more" pull
Medium. Open-ended online missions and heists alongside a story mode with a defined end.
  • Content made by other players
Low–medium. Mostly developer-made content; the main open-ended risk is other players online.

PEGI 18 with Violence, Bad language, Gambling and In-game purchases descriptors (Gambling on the PS5/Xbox Series listing). Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for 19 November 2026; its rating had not been confirmed when we checked. Dials are our editorial view of documented features (1 = low concern, 5 = high), not test scores. How we score.

Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online: two games in one box

Grand Theft Auto V, from Rockstar Games, contains two quite different experiences:

  • Story mode: a single-player crime story set in a large open city, following its characters through missions.
  • GTA Online: an open-ended online world shared with other players, with missions and heists, cars and property to buy, and a casino.

The current versions are on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (2022) and "Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced" on PC through Steam (March 2025). Older PS4, Xbox One and PC versions also exist.

Many children who talk about "GTA" mean GTA Online, and especially clips of it on video sites. A child can have seen a lot of it without ever owning the game.

Why PEGI gives GTA V an 18, in plain terms

PEGI 18 means suitable for adults only, and PEGI's reasons for GTA V are specific. In summary, its consumer advice lists:

  • violence against vulnerable and defenceless characters, including motiveless killing of innocent characters
  • graphic violence, including torture
  • illegal drug use, including drug production
  • sexual scenes (without visible genitals)
  • strong language
  • encouragement of gambling

This is not a borderline 18 of the kind some games get for a single scene. The adult content is part of the main story and setting. The descriptors on the PS5/Xbox Series listing are Violence, Bad language, Gambling and In-game purchases.

It's worth knowing that the story and online modes come in the same package. Even a child who only wants to drive around in GTA Online is inside an 18-rated game, with its spending, casino and adult strangers. The online mode is not a gentler version of the story.

A clear PEGI 18 is actually helpful. It gives you an unambiguous answer and a simple setting to enforce it.

More on what the numbers mean: age ratings explained.

Shark Cards, GTA$ and the GTA+ membership

GTA V is a paid game, but GTA Online has its own economy. Players earn GTA$ by playing, and can also buy it with real money through Shark Cards. PEGI notes GTA$ is spent on cars, apartments, clothes, weapons and casino chips.

GTA+ is an optional paid monthly membership. Like any subscription, it renews until cancelled. Check the platform's subscriptions page if you're not sure what's running on a shared console.

Because Shark Cards are sold through the console or PC store, the controls that matter are the platform's:

  • Xbox: Ask to buy (on by default for child accounts).
  • PlayStation: Monthly Spending Limit (default 0 for child accounts).
  • Steam: purchase requests go to an adult to approve.

On Xbox, Microsoft suggests adding money to a child's account instead of linking a card. The balance can't be overdrawn, though anything already in it can be spent without approval. The same applies to gift cards on any platform: approval tools guard the card, not the balance.

See in-game spending for more.

Casino chips and the PEGI 'Gambling' descriptor

The newer GTA V listing carries PEGI's Gambling descriptor. According to PEGI, players can exchange in-game money for casino chips and play roulette, blackjack, poker, horse racing and slots in GTA Online.

The money involved is in-game GTA$, not cash winnings. But GTA$ can be bought with real money through Shark Cards, so real money can end up funding simulated gambling. That combination is a big part of why PEGI flags "encouragement of gambling".

Reports say casino access is blocked in some countries. We could not confirm the current UK position on an official page, so don't assume it's switched off here.

If an older teen does play GTA Online, the casino is worth a direct, non-judgemental chat about how gambling mechanics are designed.

Public sessions: who else is in the GTA Online city

PEGI notes that GTA Online involves real-time interaction with other players. Public sessions mix people who don't know each other, and most players are adults, as you'd expect for a PEGI 18 game.

We found no dedicated Rockstar parental-control system, and the details of in-game chat options weren't confirmed on an official page. The dependable controls are the platform's:

  • PlayStation: Communication and User-Generated Content set to Restrict blocks text messages and voice chat with other players.
  • Xbox: the Social, Multiplayer and Cross-network play tiles in the Xbox Family Settings app.
  • Steam: Steam feature access in Steam Families covers community and chat restrictions.

For an older teen who is approaching 18, the conversation is more useful than a blanket block. Talk about what to do if someone online is abusive or asks them to move to another app, and how to mute and report on their console.

More in our guide to online chat and strangers.

When 'everyone at school plays GTA' comes up

Most parents hear this at some point, and it's rarely completely true. Some classmates may play, often on an older sibling's or parent's account. Many more have watched clips online.

A calm response tends to go further than a flat no:

  • Name the reason. "PEGI says it's for adults because of torture scenes and gambling" is concrete, not arbitrary.
  • Ask what draws them to it. Usually it's driving, freedom to explore, or playing with friends.
  • Offer an age-appropriate alternative that scratches the same itch, such as a racing game or an open-world game rated for their age. Our 13 to 15 age guide can help you find one.

Be honest about what adults like in it too. It's a large open world with driving, a story and online missions with friends. Acknowledging that makes the "not yet" more credible.

When an older sibling or adult in the house plays it

This is the most common route by which younger children see GTA V. A few household agreements help: the adult plays on their own account, with the age filter set on the child's account. The game isn't played while younger children are in the room. And GTA Online sessions, where strangers' voices can come through, stay on a headset. None of this needs to be dramatic. It's the same logic as an 18-certificate film on the family TV.

Locking GTA V out with console and Steam age limits

GTA V's single PEGI 18 makes age filters very effective. Set them on your child's account, not just the console:

  1. Xbox: in the Xbox Family Settings app, choose your child, then Content restrictions > Apply age filters. Anything rated higher needs your approval. Full Xbox steps.
  2. PlayStation 5: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > [child] > Parental Controls > Age Level for Games. Then set a console restriction passcode, and set User Creation and Guest Login to Not Allowed. Full PlayStation steps.
  3. Steam: add your child to Steam Families as a Child and turn on parental controls to limit game access. Full Steam steps.

On a shared console where an adult owns GTA V, these settings stop the child's account launching it. Watch out for shared logins and guest access, which are the usual ways round.

The gaps that catch families out

  • One account per child. PlayStation restrictions sit on the account, not the console, so each child needs their own child account.
  • Correct date of birth. Xbox's age-based settings depend on the birthday on the child's Microsoft account.
  • Your password and approval phone. If a child knows your Microsoft password or can use the phone that receives requests, they can approve their own.
  • Forgotten passcodes. If you forget the PS5 console restriction passcode, you have to reset the console. Write it somewhere safe.
  • Steam only covers Steam. Steam Families controls games in the Steam library. Games launched through another PC store need that store's own settings.
  • Adult or Child. In Steam Families, a child added as an Adult isn't covered by parental controls, and fixing it means contacting Steam Support.

GTA VI and what to check before 19 November 2026

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on 19 November 2026. When we checked, its PEGI rating had not been confirmed, so look it up on pegi.info before deciding. It will be a separate game with its own rating and descriptors.

The good news is that age filters work by rating, not by title. If your child's account is set to their age, any newly released game rated above it will be blocked or need your approval, whatever it's called.

Expect the usual pattern around a major release: trailers and clips everywhere, friends talking about it and requests for it as a Christmas present. If it is rated 18 like its predecessor, the same reasoning and settings apply. If its rating turns out to be different, read PEGI's consumer advice for the specific reasons before deciding. Ratings and descriptors are listed on pegi.info once published.

Big launches bring a wave of clips and playground talk. Setting age filters now is easier than in launch week.

A straight answer on GTA V for under-18s

GTA V is PEGI 18 for clearly adult reasons: torture, killing innocent characters, drug production, sexual content and simulated gambling, with an online world full of adult strangers. For a child under 18, the PEGI rating is the honest guide, and the console settings to enforce it take a few minutes.

The harder part is the conversation, not the setting. Explain the reasons, listen to what appeals, offer something for their age, and keep the age filter in place as a quiet backstop.

If you discover your child has already played it, perhaps at a friend's house, there's no need to panic. Ask what they saw and how they felt about it, and whether anyone spoke to them online. For worries about online contact, the NSPCC, Childline and CEOP all offer support for families.

Parents also ask about Grand Theft Auto V

Is GTA 5 OK for a 12 year old?

GTA V is PEGI 18. PEGI cites graphic violence including torture, killing innocent characters, drug production, sexual scenes, strong language and encouragement of gambling. It's not designed for a 12-year-old. A console age filter will block it.

Why is GTA V rated 18?

PEGI lists violence against defenceless characters, graphic violence including torture, illegal drug use, sexual scenes, strong language and encouragement of gambling, as GTA Online includes casino games played with chips.

How do I block GTA on my child's PlayStation or Xbox?

On PS5, set Age Level for Games in your child's Parental Controls, then add a console restriction passcode and stop new user and guest logins. On Xbox, use Content restrictions > Apply age filters in the Xbox Family Settings app.

Does GTA Online have gambling?

PEGI says players can exchange in-game money for casino chips and play roulette, blackjack, poker, horse racing and slots. In-game money can be bought with real money through Shark Cards, which is why PEGI added a Gambling descriptor.

What are Shark Cards in GTA?

Shark Cards are real-money purchases that give GTA$, the GTA Online currency, used for cars, property, clothes, weapons and casino chips. They're sold through the console or PC store, so platform spending controls apply.

When does GTA 6 come out and what age is it?

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for 19 November 2026. Its PEGI rating had not been confirmed when we checked, so check pegi.info. Console age filters will apply to it automatically once it's rated.
