Roblox parental controls, step by step

Roblox has its own parental controls that follow the account across phones, tablets, computers and consoles. Roblox changed its account types and chat rules in 2026, so it is worth reviewing even if you set it up before.

What you need before touching Roblox settings

  • Your child's Roblox account with the correct birthday
  • Either a linked parent account (your own Roblox account; you verify you're an adult with a government ID or credit card - the FAQ also mentions facial age estimation) OR Parent mode on your child's device (rolling out gradually; no account needed)
  • For chat: your child must complete an age check (facial age estimation, or ID for 13+)

Setting up Roblox controls, step by step

  1. On your child's account go to Settings (desktop: gear icon top right; mobile: More > Settings) > Parental Controls > Add parent. Or use the link in Roblox's parental consent email.
  2. Select Create account (or Use existing account), verify your age with a government ID or credit card, then select Agree to link.
  3. On your own account go to Settings > Parental controls and select your child's account.
  4. Scroll to Settings you manage > Content restrictions: set Content maturity (Minimal, Mild, Moderate or Restricted) and use Blocked games / Allowed games.
  5. Settings you manage > Communication: set Experience chat, Direct chat, Chat and party with friends, Friends chat.
  6. Settings you manage > Spending restrictions: set Monthly spending limit and Spending notifications.
  7. Scroll to Screen time > Manage > choose a Daily limit.
  8. Respond to your child's requests under Pending requests (or from the request email) with Allow or Don't Allow.

Stopping surprise spending on Roblox

  • Settings > Parental controls > [child] > Settings you manage > Spending restrictions > Monthly spending limit > enter 0-10,000 > Update (default No limit; resets each calendar month, in local currency).
  • Spending notifications: All transactions, High spend alerts (default) or None - needs a linked parent account.
  • Spending limits stop applying at age 13 (notifications can continue).
  • The limit doesn't affect gift card redemption and may not apply on some consoles - e.g. it doesn't cover Xbox, so also set Xbox's own purchase approval.

Who can message your child on Roblox

  • Settings > Parental controls > [child] > Settings you manage > Communication: Experience chat (On/Off), Direct chat (On/Off), Chat and party with friends (On/Off), Friends chat (All friends / Trusted friends / No one), Live collaboration in Studio, Gameplay coordination (Quick Words On/Off).
  • All users must pass an age check to use chat (worldwide since January 2026). Roblox Kids (under 9) have chat off by default; it can only be turned on through a linked parent account for age-checked users.
  • Settings don't cover chat features a game creator builds into their own game.

For the wider picture, see Chat & strangers.

Roblox play-time limits and bedtimes

  • Settings > Parental controls > [child] > Screen time > Manage > Daily limit (No limit or 15-minute steps).
  • From 13 the teen manages their own screen-time limit; you can still see screen time and top games.
  • No bedtime/time-window option was found - only a daily total.

Routines that make limits easier to keep are in Time & routines.

Where Roblox set-ups usually go wrong

  • The birthday on the account decides the account type (Roblox Kids for under 9, Roblox Select for 9-15, standard from 16) and the defaults - check and correct it via a linked parent account.
  • Without an age check, chat stays off and the child only sees the Roblox Kids/Select catalogue.
  • Many controls pass to the child at 13 (screen time, blocking; spending limits no longer apply); accounts unlink automatically at 18.
  • Parent mode can't send spending notifications - set up a linked parent account for those.
  • Don't share your parent account with the child - anyone with access can change their settings.
  • Blocking a game takes effect the next time they join it.
