Fortnite: a calm guide for UK parents

Fortnite is less one game than a free app full of them: a 100-player shoot-out, a LEGO building world, a music game and thousands of islands made by players. Here is how each part is rated, how the money works and which settings matter.

Parent Check

PEGI 12 (Battle Royale)
  • Contact with strangers
Medium. Voice and text chat with squads; off for under-13s until a parent consents, with age-based caps after that.
  • Pressure to spend
High. V-Bucks, a rotating Item Shop, Battle Pass, monthly Crew and paid items inside creator islands.
  • Violence & scary bits
Low–medium. Cartoon shooting with no blood; damage shows as numbers and defeated players simply disappear.
  • "Just one more" pull
High. Seasons, Battle Pass rewards, a changing shop and quick restarts all encourage another round.
  • Content made by other players
High. Player-made islands vary widely in tone, which is why PEGI rates the platform Parental Guidance.

Battle Royale, Festival and Save the World are PEGI 12; LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is PEGI 7; Fortnite as a whole platform is 'Parental Guidance Recommended' because of player-made islands. The UK App Store lists it as 13+, and PEGI's 2026 rule changes on paid random items mean ratings may change. Dials are our editorial view of documented features (1 = low concern, 5 = high), not test scores. How we score.

One Fortnite app, several very different games

When your child says they are "playing Fortnite", they could mean very different things. Epic's app holds several modes that PEGI rates separately, and parents should check which one is on screen.

  • Fortnite Battle Royale (PEGI 12): up to 100 players land on an island and the last player or team standing wins. PEGI notes moderate violence but no blood or injuries. Damage appears as numbers and defeated characters vanish.
  • LEGO Fortnite Odyssey (PEGI 7): a building and survival world in LEGO style, rated for younger players.
  • Fortnite Festival (PEGI 12): a music game. The 12 is for song lyrics that include bad language and sexual innuendo, not for violence.
  • Fortnite Save the World (PEGI 12): a team mode against computer-controlled enemies.
  • Player-made islands: games built by creators with Epic's tools. These change constantly.

Because those islands come and go, PEGI gives the Fortnite platform "Parental Guidance Recommended" rather than a number. The UK App Store lists the app as 13+, and Google Play also says parental guidance is recommended. None of these labels is wrong. Each one rates a different slice of the app.

Ask "which Fortnite?" A child building in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is in a different place from one in a squad in Battle Royale.

What a Battle Royale match feels like from the sofa

A Battle Royale match starts with players dropping onto a shared map, gathering equipment and trying to survive while the play area shrinks. Children often play in squads with friends, talking constantly as they go.

There is no fixed length. A player knocked out early is back in the lobby within moments and can queue again straight away. A strong player might last until the final few. That uneven rhythm explains a lot of bedtime arguments, because "five more minutes" means nothing when you can't know how long a match will run.

A better deal than minutes

Many families agree on a number of matches, or say "finish this one, then stop" when time is called, rather than a hard stop mid-match. Leaving a squad match early lets down friends, and children feel that strongly. A warning given before they queue tends to go better than one given at the final circle.

Epic's time limits give an in-game warning when 30 minutes are left. That is enough to finish a match rather than be cut off in the middle.

V-Bucks, the Battle Pass, the Item Shop and Fortnite Crew

Fortnite is free to download, and PEGI notes it can be played without paying. The money comes from V-Bucks, Fortnite's own currency, bought with real money through Epic or through the console or phone store.

V-Bucks are spent in a few places:

  • The Item Shop: outfits, dances and other cosmetic items. The selection rotates, which can create a "buy it before it goes" feeling.
  • The Battle Pass: bought with V-Bucks each season. It unlocks a track of rewards your child earns by playing.
  • Fortnite Crew: a monthly subscription that repeats until it is cancelled.
  • Creator islands: since 9 January 2026, creators can sell items inside their own islands for V-Bucks.

Where the spending limits do and don't reach

Epic sets an automatic daily limit of $100 on Epic payments for under-13s, and you can require a PIN for Epic payments. Epic is clear that these settings do not cover purchases made through PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, Apple or Google. They also don't limit V-Bucks your child already owns. If they play on a console or phone, that platform's purchase approval matters just as much.

Gift cards still work on under-13 Cabined Accounts. Whatever balance is on the account can be spent.

Our in-game spending guide covers pocket-money approaches that work across games.

Since January 2026, Epic has let creators of player-made islands sell paid random items, where you pay V-Bucks without knowing exactly what you will get. Epic requires the odds to be shown before purchase and says the feature is not available in every region. Press reports say Epic's own modes, such as Battle Royale, are not covered by the creator policy.

Epic Parental Controls include an Allow Paid Random Items setting. If you see it on your child's account, switching it off is a simple way to remove the question. We could not confirm on an official UK-specific page exactly how the feature appears for UK accounts, so check the setting yourself rather than assume.

The UK picture

Loot boxes are not regulated as gambling in the UK. In July 2023 the government chose an industry-led approach. Under the industry principles, paid loot boxes should not be available to under-18s unless a parent enables them, and odds and spending controls should be provided. Separately, PEGI changed its criteria in 2026. New games with paid random items now default to PEGI 16, and some existing digital-only games are being re-rated. Ratings for live-service games like Fortnite can therefore shift over time.

Cabined Accounts, squads and who can talk to your child

Fortnite has voice and text chat, and squads can include random teammates as well as friends. Epic's approach depends on age.

  • Under 13 (the UK age of digital consent): the account starts as a Cabined Account. Voice chat and free text chat are off until a parent gives consent.
  • After consent, under 10: the most open chat setting available is Friends Only.
  • After consent, 10 to 12: the most open setting is "Friends, team members, & connections". Connections are friends of friends.
  • 13 and over: parents can allow "Everybody", which includes strangers.

The two settings are called Epic Voice Chat Permission and Epic Text Chat Permission, and each has four choices: Everybody, Friends, team members, & connections, Friends Only, or Nobody. You can also turn on Require a PIN to Add Friends, so new friends need your approval.

Voice and text reporting are always on for under-18s, and the mature-language filter is always on for under-13s.

Turning voice chat off in Fortnite does not stop console party chat. Set chat on the console as well.

If your child gives an older birthday when signing up, they won't get a Cabined Account. It's worth checking the account details. Our guide to online chat and strangers has conversation starters.

Player-made islands and Fortnite Content Ratings

Player-made islands are where Fortnite varies most. Some are gentle puzzles or obstacle courses. Others are intense shooters or social hangouts. This variety is the reason PEGI rates the platform Parental Guidance rather than a number.

Epic gives you two tools here:

  • Fortnite Content Ratings: blocks islands above an age rating you choose. Epic's own help page gives US-style examples such as Everyone 10+ and Teen. We couldn't confirm which labels UK accounts see, so look at the setting on screen.
  • Allow Creative Mode and Unreal Editor for Fortnite: controls whether your child can build and publish their own islands.

One quirk is worth knowing. Epic notes that a lower store rating such as Everyone 10+ still lets a child download Fortnite but blocks Teen-rated islands, including Battle Royale. That can be a neat way to allow LEGO Fortnite Odyssey without the shooter.

Seasons and rotating shops: why Fortnite rarely feels finished

Fortnite is a live-service game, so it never really ends. Seasonal Battle Passes give rewards for regular play, the Item Shop changes its stock, and new islands appear all the time. None of this is hidden, but together it creates a steady pull to check back in.

Epic's Time Limit Controls are some of the more detailed in any game:

  • a daily total, or set time windows (useful for school nights and bedtime)
  • separate allowances for Play Time and Create Time, if you want building to count differently
  • Request for More Time, so your child can ask rather than argue
  • Time Reports and a weekly email summary

When time runs out, Fortnite is blocked until the next day or window unless you add more with your PIN. Our screen time and routines guide covers making limits stick across devices.

What Fortnite does well for families

Fortnite's popularity isn't an accident, and there are real positives to set against the concerns.

  • Gentle presentation of violence: PEGI notes there is no blood or injury detail in Battle Royale.
  • Playing with real friends: for many children, a squad match is how they socialise after school, much as earlier generations used the phone.
  • Range: a building world, a music game and puzzle islands sit alongside the shooter, so there is often a calmer option.
  • Strong controls: chat is off by default for under-13s, and you get PIN-locked payments, time windows and weekly reports.
  • Free to play: nobody has to spend to join in.

The building side deserves a mention too. If you allow Creative Mode and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, older children can design and publish their own islands. For some, that becomes a first taste of game design. You stay in control of that through the same parental controls page.

Ask your child to show you their favourite island. You'll learn more in ten minutes of watching than from any rating label.

Should your child play Fortnite? A verdict by age

For a child of 12 or over, Battle Royale sits within its PEGI rating. The real work is setting chat, spending and time controls on both Epic and the device. For younger children, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey (PEGI 7) can be a reasonable way in, especially combined with Fortnite Content Ratings.

Whatever age your child is, set up controls on the account they actually play on. Console players sometimes have a separate Epic account, and Epic suggests comparing Account IDs. Then add the console's or phone's own controls: Epic and Fortnite, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iPhone and iPad or Android.

Set up that way, Fortnite can be a sociable, fairly low-gore game. Without the settings, it is an open door to spending and to chat with people your child doesn't know.

Parents also ask about Fortnite

Is Fortnite OK for an 8 year old?

Battle Royale is PEGI 12, so it is above an 8-year-old's rating. LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is PEGI 7. Under-13s start on a Cabined Account with voice and free text chat off. If you allow Fortnite, use Fortnite Content Ratings to block Teen-rated islands and keep chat on Friends Only.

Why is Fortnite PEGI 12 but the App Store says 13+?

Different bodies rate different things. PEGI rates Battle Royale 12 for moderate cartoon violence and gives the overall platform Parental Guidance because of player-made islands. Apple uses its own age bands and lists the app as 13+.

Can my child talk to strangers on Fortnite?

It depends on age and your settings. Under-13s have voice and free text chat off until a parent consents. After that, under-10s can be set no wider than Friends Only. From 13, a parent can allow Everybody. Set Epic Voice and Text Chat Permission, and restrict console party chat separately.

How do I stop my child spending money on Fortnite?

Turn on Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments and turn off Allow Paid Random Items. Then set purchase approval or a spending limit on the console or phone store, because Epic's settings don't cover those purchases. Gift card balances can still be spent.

Does Fortnite have loot boxes?

Since January 2026, some player-made islands can sell paid random items for V-Bucks, with odds shown before purchase. Epic says the feature isn't in every region. The Allow Paid Random Items setting lets parents switch it off where it appears.

Can I set a time limit on Fortnite?

Yes. Epic's Time Limit Controls let you set a daily total or time windows, separate Play Time and Create Time, and get weekly reports. Your child gets a warning 30 minutes before time runs out and can request more.
