Parent Check
PEGI 16- Contact with strangersMedium. Online matches against strangers; EA child accounts can't play online, teen accounts can, subject to parental controls.
- Pressure to spendVery high. Paid random player packs bought with FC Points, plus time-limited store items and a paid Premium Season Pass.
- Violence & scary bitsLow. It's football: no violence, no bad language in the sport itself.
- "Just one more" pullHigh. Daily, weekly and seasonal objectives plus limited-time events, which PEGI says may pressure players to return.
- Content made by other playersLow. Very little made by other players; you mainly see their team names and squads.
PEGI 16 with the 'In-game purchases' descriptor. PEGI's consumer advice says the 16 is because players can buy loot boxes (random player packs); earlier editions in the series were PEGI 3, and Steam UK also shows PEGI 16. Dials are our editorial view of documented features (1 = low concern, 5 = high), not test scores. How we score.

What an evening of FC 27 looks like on the sofa
EA Sports FC 27 is a football game: your child picks a team and plays full matches against the computer, a friend on the sofa, or someone online. It's the successor to the long-running FIFA games, and it came out on 25 September 2026 on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC.
Match length can be adjusted in the settings, so a game can be kept short or stretched out. Most evenings are a run of matches rather than one long session, which matters later when you think about stopping points.
The game is really several games under one roof:
- Kick-Off: pick two teams and play. No collecting, no shop, ideal for siblings or a parent who wants a go.
- Career: manage or play as one footballer or club over seasons, mostly against the computer.
- Ultimate Team: build a squad by collecting player items, then play matches, many of them online against strangers. This is where the packs, the store and the daily objectives live.
PEGI notes that a large share of play happens in online Ultimate Team, and it is the mode most children will hear about at school. Everything that pushed the rating up sits inside it.
Ultimate Team packs and why the rating jumped to 16
If you bought a FIFA or FC game for a younger child before, you'll remember a PEGI 3 on the box. FC 27 is the first in the series rated PEGI 16, and PEGI's own advice is clear about why: the game lets players buy random player packs, so they don't know what they'll get, and they can buy them an unlimited number of times.
That change comes from PEGI, not EA. In June 2026 PEGI updated its criteria so that new games with paid random items default to PEGI 16. The football, the commentary and the crowds are exactly as tame as ever; the 16 is about the spending mechanic, not the content on screen.
What a pack actually is
A pack is a bundle of player items for Ultimate Team. Rare, highly rated footballers turn up only occasionally, which is what makes opening packs exciting and what makes it easy to buy "just one more". EA's help pages say pack previews exist, but the overall model is still chance-based.
Where the UK stands on loot boxes
Loot boxes are not treated as gambling under UK law. In July 2023 the government chose an industry-led approach instead: the games industry body Ukie set principles saying paid loot boxes should not be available to under-18s unless a parent or guardian enables them, alongside spending controls and clear odds. You can read more in our guide to age ratings and our in-game spending explainer.
FC Points, coins and the Premium Season Pass
There are two kinds of money in Ultimate Team, and children often blur them together, so it helps to know the difference.
- FC Points are bought with real money. Steam UK lists an FC Points pack at £4.49. They buy Ultimate Team packs, store items and the Premium Season Pass.
- Coins are earned by playing matches and completing objectives. Packs can be bought with coins too, so a child can open packs without spending real money, which keeps the habit alive even when the card is locked.
The Season Pass
There is a free Season Pass track that everyone progresses through, and a paid Premium Season Pass with extra rewards. PEGI points out that its rewards are time-limited, so the pressure isn't only to buy it but to play enough before the season ends to collect what was paid for.
The store that keeps changing
PEGI's advice also mentions time-limited items in the Ultimate Team store. Offers that disappear are designed to make a decision feel urgent. A simple house rule helps: nothing bought on the day it's first seen.
One more thing to know: the game itself already costs money up front, so Ultimate Team spending is on top of the purchase price. Agreeing a figure, or zero, before the first match avoids a row later.
Daily objectives, live events and the 'one more match' pull
Football is naturally moreish: matches are short, and losing makes you want a rematch. Ultimate Team adds a layer of structure on top that's designed to bring players back regularly.
PEGI's description of FC 27 lists daily and weekly objectives, seasonal objectives and limited-time events, and notes that these may pressure players to return. In practice that looks like a list of small tasks (score with a certain kind of player, win a set number of matches) that refresh every day or week, each with a reward.
Why this matters more than the matches
Under PEGI's 2026 criteria, daily-reward "play-by-appointment" designs are now something the ratings board weighs in its own right. The worry isn't that a child plays football; it's that the game sets the timetable. A child who feels they'll "lose" a reward by not logging in on a school night is responding to design, not being difficult.
- Agree that objectives are a bonus, not a duty.
- Pick a stopping point before starting, such as "three matches", rather than a clock time mid-match.
- Use FC Playtime's Match Limit, which can enforce that number for you.
Our screen time and routines page has more ideas for making stopping points stick without nightly negotiations.
Online opponents and how EA accounts handle teens
Much of Ultimate Team is played online against people your child doesn't know, matched by the game. Voice chat exists in online play, but we couldn't confirm the exact in-game chat options for FC 27 from official pages, so treat the console's communication settings as your main lever.
EA child and teen accounts
Every player needs an EA Account. EA's help pages explain that a child account (under the minimum age for your country) can't play online at all. A teen account can play online and chat, subject to parental controls, and you can link a teen account to your own to set playtime limits and spend controls.
That makes the date of birth on the account important. If it was set up with a made-up adult birthday, none of the age-based protections apply.
Console settings still matter
- PlayStation: Communication and User-Generated Content set to Restrict blocks text and voice chat with other players.
- Xbox: the Social tile in the Xbox Family Settings app controls who your child can talk to.
- Nintendo Switch: Restricted Features covers communication with others; on Switch 2, GameChat needs your approval for each friend.

The genuinely good side of a football game at home
It's easy to read a PEGI 16 and assume the worst, so it's worth being fair about what this game offers.
- No violence or bad language in the sport itself. PEGI's only concern is spending.
- It's social in the old-fashioned way. Kick-Off on the sofa with a sibling, cousin or parent is one of the easiest ways into gaming together.
- It feeds a real interest. Children who love football often learn squads, formations, tactics and leagues from other countries through Career mode.
- The loot-box-free modes are full games. Kick-Off and Career can be played without ever touching a pack.
There's also a free 'EA SPORTS FC 27 Lite' preview with selected modes on Steam, which carries the same PEGI 16 on Steam UK. It can be a way to see whether the interest lasts before buying the full game.
FC Playtime: the in-game limits most parents don't know exist
EA's own tool, FC Playtime, is one of the more useful in-game controls in any sports game, but it's off by default, so most families never see it.
According to EA Help, FC Playtime can show weekly time and matches played, and set:
- a Match Limit;
- an FC Points purchase limit;
- an Ultimate Team pack purchase limit.
- Open Ultimate Team and go to Club, then Settings, then Playtime (it can also be set from the companion or web app).
- Turn FC Playtime on.
- Set the pack and FC Points limits to zero, or to an amount you've agreed together.
- Set a Match Limit that matches your house rule.
FC Playtime lives inside the game, so a determined child could change it. Back it up with limits they can't reach: PlayStation Monthly Spending Limit (which starts at 0), Xbox Ask to buy, Nintendo eShop Spending Restrictions, or Steam child purchase requests.
A family deal for FC 27: football first, packs by agreement
The PEGI 16 on FC 27 asks a different question from a 16 on a shooter. It isn't about what your child will see; it's about whether they'll be offered paid random packs and limited-time offers, over and over, inside the mode their friends talk about most.
Plenty of families land somewhere in the middle. The game stays, Kick-Off and Career are open, and Ultimate Team is either played with a zero pack budget (coins only) or with a small monthly allowance that's agreed in advance and enforced by FC Playtime and the console.
- Under 16: the rating says no to the packs. If you go ahead, take spending out of the picture first.
- 16 and 17: within the rating, but still worth a budget conversation, in line with the UK's under-18 loot box principles.
- Whatever the age: watch for objectives setting the evening's timetable.
It also helps to talk about packs before they come up. Ask your child what they think the chances are of getting a top player, and what they'd do if they spent their money and didn't. Children who've thought it through in advance tend to be less swayed by a limited-time offer in the store.
Because ratings for live games can change, check the current listing in your console's store before buying. Our 13 to 15 age page covers the other games teens of this age tend to ask for.

Why is EA Sports FC 27 rated 16 when FIFA used to be 3?
PEGI says FC 27 is rated 16 because players can buy random player packs in Ultimate Team without knowing what they'll get. PEGI changed its criteria in June 2026 so new games with paid random items default to PEGI 16. The football content itself hasn't changed.
Is EA FC 27 OK for a 10 year old?
The football is fine for any age, but the PEGI 16 is about paid packs. If you decide to allow it, keep to Kick-Off and Career, turn on FC Playtime with zero pack and FC Points limits, and set your console's spending limit to zero.
Can my child play FC 27 without buying packs?
Yes. Kick-Off and Career modes don't use packs, and in Ultimate Team packs can also be bought with coins earned by playing. FC Playtime and console limits can stop real-money purchases.
What are FC Points?
FC Points are Ultimate Team's premium currency, bought with real money. They buy packs, store items and the Premium Season Pass. Steam UK lists an FC Points pack at £4.49.
Can you turn off chat in EA FC 27?
The most reliable way is through your console: Communication and User-Generated Content on PlayStation, the Social tile on Xbox, or Restricted Features on Nintendo Switch. EA child accounts can't play online at all; teen accounts can, subject to parental controls.
How do I stop my child spending money on FIFA packs?
Turn on FC Playtime in Ultimate Team (Club > Settings > Playtime) and set the pack and FC Points limits to zero, then set the console's own spending limit to zero or approval-only. Keep gift card balances low, as existing balances can usually still be spent.
