Roblox: a calm guide for UK parents

Roblox isn't one game but a huge collection of games made by its users, from gentle obstacle courses to scary escapes. In 2026 it changed a lot: age checks for chat and new accounts built around a child's age.

PEGI: Parental Guidance RecommendedCreator game platformChecked 3 November 2026

Parent Check

PEGI: Parental Guidance Recommended
  • Contact with strangers
Medium. Text and voice chat need an age check; chat is limited to similar age groups, plus Trusted Connections for 13+.
  • Pressure to spend
Very high. Robux buy avatar items, game passes and paid random items; Premium is a monthly subscription.
  • Violence & scary bits
Low–medium. Roblox-made games show mild blocky violence with no blood, plus some jump scares.
  • "Just one more" pull
High. Endless choice of games, friends online and many creator games built around regular returns.
  • Content made by other players
Very high. Almost everything is made by users, so content varies widely; labels and curated catalogues help.

PEGI gives no number because the content is user-made and unpredictable. We use 9 as our editorial starting point because that's where Roblox Select accounts begin; under-9s get the more limited Roblox Kids. The UK App Store lists it as 13+. Dials are our editorial view of documented features (1 = low concern, 5 = high), not test scores. How we score.

Roblox is a platform of games made by its players

The most useful thing to know about Roblox is that Roblox Corporation makes very few of the games on it. Users build them, and anyone can browse and play. One evening your child might play a cooking game, a tycoon simulator and an escape game, all inside the same app.

That is why PEGI rates Roblox Parental Guidance Recommended instead of an age number. The user-generated content is broad and unpredictable. PEGI notes that Roblox's own games include frequent mild violence between blocky characters, with no blood, and some frightening jump scares. The UK App Store lists the app as 13+, and Google Play also recommends parental guidance.

On Roblox, the question isn't "is Roblox OK?" so much as "which games, and with which settings?"

A session has no set shape. It depends entirely on the game chosen, from a five-minute obstacle course to an hours-long role-play world.

Roblox Kids, Roblox Select and the maturity labels on every game

Since June 2026, Roblox has put accounts into types based on age:

  • Roblox Kids (under 9): only games rated Minimal or Mild that pass Roblox's selection process. Chat is off by default.
  • Roblox Select (9 to 15): games up to Moderate that pass selection.
  • Standard accounts: from 16.

The account type comes from the birthday on the account. If your child gave a false age, they may see the wrong catalogue. You can check and correct it through a linked parent account.

Content maturity labels

Every game carries a Roblox label: Minimal, Mild, Moderate, Content May Vary, 16+ Content, or Restricted / 18+. Restricted games are only open to users age-checked as 18+. Games with social hangouts or free-form drawing tools are limited to age-checked users aged 16 and over.

In parental controls you can set the highest maturity level allowed and block or allow specific games. A blocked game takes effect the next time your child tries to join it.

Robux, Premium and the avatar shop

Roblox is free to play. The economy runs on Robux, bought with real money and spent on:

  • avatar items, the clothes and accessories that make a character look like your child wants
  • game passes and items sold inside individual games by their creators

Roblox Premium is an optional monthly subscription with several price tiers. Like any subscription, it renews until you cancel it.

The look of an avatar matters socially on Roblox, much as trainers might at school. That makes Robux requests one of the most common family flashpoints.

Roblox's spending tools

  • Monthly spending limit: anything from 0 to 10,000 in local currency, resetting each calendar month. The default is no limit.
  • Spending notifications: all transactions, high spend alerts (the default) or none. This needs a linked parent account.
Roblox's spending limits stop applying when your child turns 13. They don't affect gift cards and don't cover Xbox purchases, so set Xbox's own approval too.

A pocket-money approach that tends to hold

Many families set the Roblox monthly limit to a figure that matches an agreed allowance, then also turn on purchase approval on the phone or console. Your child then has a predictable budget, and anything over it becomes a request rather than a surprise. Spending notifications set to all transactions are useful for the first few months, while everyone gets used to it.

See our in-game spending guide for allowance ideas.

Spins, eggs and crates: paid random items on Roblox

Many creator games sell paid random items, such as paying Robux to spin a wheel or hatch an egg for a chance at something rare. PEGI notes that some Roblox purchases "may be randomised in nature". Google Play lists in-game purchases that include random items, and Apple lists "Loot Boxes".

Roblox's rules require creators to show all possible outcomes and the numerical odds before purchase. Roblox can make creators remove these items for restricted users, for example under-18s in Brazil. We found no UK-specific restriction.

In the UK, loot boxes are not treated as gambling. Industry principles agreed with the government say paid loot boxes should not be available to under-18s unless a parent enables them. PEGI's 2026 rules also changed how games with paid random items are rated, so ratings across platforms may change.

Looking at the odds screen together is a good conversation starter. "A 1 in 200 chance" means more to a child once they see it written down.

Age checks, age-banded chat and Trusted Connections

Roblox has text and voice chat. Since January 2026, every user must complete an age check to use chat, either by facial age estimation or, for 13+, with ID. Users are then placed in age groups (under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, 21+) and can chat only with people in similar groups.

The exception is Trusted Connections, which lets age-checked users aged 13+ chat with people they know in real life. Chat in games is off by default for under-9s unless a parent consents after an age check. Without an age check, chat stays off.

The Communication settings you control

  • Experience chat (On/Off): chat inside games
  • Direct chat (On/Off)
  • Chat and party with friends (On/Off)
  • Friends chat: All friends, Trusted friends or No one

Age-banding cuts down adult-child contact, but it relies on age checks and doesn't make every conversation safe. Children their own age can still be unkind, and anyone can try to move a chat to another app. Agree a few simple rules: no personal details, tell you about anyone who asks to chat elsewhere, and use block and report freely.

Roblox notes these settings don't cover chat features a creator builds into their own game, so talk to your child about what to do if someone makes them uncomfortable. Our online chat and strangers guide can help.

Why Roblox is hard to put down

Roblox has no natural ending. There is always another game, and friends are usually already in one. Each creator designs their own game, and many use daily rewards, timed events or limited items to bring players back. How much varies from game to game, so it's worth asking your child what their favourite game rewards them for.

Roblox's Screen time control lets you set a daily limit in 15-minute steps and see your child's top games. It offers a daily total only, with no bedtime window. For a hard stop at bedtime, use the device's own schedule as well: iPhone and iPad, Android or Xbox.

Spotting the hooks in a particular game

When your child is fixed on one Roblox game, a few questions help you see how it's designed: Does it reward you just for logging in? Is anything only available for a limited time? Do you lose progress if you stop? Can you pay to skip waiting? None of these is wrong in itself, but a game that ticks every box will feel much harder to leave. Naming the design out loud helps children notice it for themselves.

From 13, teens manage their own screen-time limit, though you can still see their screen time and top games. Our screen time and routines guide has ideas for that handover.

What children genuinely get from Roblox

Roblox has real strengths, and they're worth naming. Seen up close, much of it is closer to a digital playground than a single game.

  • Creativity: Roblox games are made by users, and some children move from playing to building their own in Roblox Studio. That can lead to real interest in design and coding.
  • Variety: there are calm, silly and puzzle-based games alongside the more intense ones.
  • Friendship: for many children it's a shared space with classmates, much like a playground.
  • A much stronger safety framework in 2026: mandatory age checks for chat, age-banded chat, curated Kids and Select catalogues, odds disclosure and detailed parental controls.
Play a game together that your child picks. It's the quickest way to understand what draws them in.

Linking a parent account and the first Roblox settings to set

Roblox's controls work best through a linked parent account, which needs an age check of its own. There is also a "Parent mode" on the child's device, but it can't send spending notifications.

  1. On your child's account, go to Settings (gear icon on desktop, More > Settings on mobile) > Parental Controls > Add parent.
  2. Create or use an existing account, verify your age with ID or a credit card, and agree to link.
  3. On your own account, go to Settings > Parental controls and choose your child.
  4. Under Settings you manage, set Content restrictions, Communication and Spending restrictions.
  5. Under Screen time > Manage, choose a Daily limit.
  6. Answer your child's requests under Pending requests with Allow or Don't Allow.

Don't share your parent login with your child, because anyone with access can change their settings. Full walkthrough: Roblox parental controls.

Roblox at 7, 10 and 13: a balanced verdict

Around 7, Roblox Kids keeps things to curated, milder games with chat off. That's a reasonable start if you sit nearby and link your account. Around 10, Roblox Select opens more games. The big decisions are chat and a monthly spending limit. At 13, many controls pass to your child and spending limits stop applying, so the habits you build earlier matter most.

Roblox in 2026 is safer than it was, but much of that protection depends on the account's birthday being right and on settings being in place. With those done, it can be a creative and sociable space. Without them, it's an open shop and a crowded playground.

It's also worth revisiting the settings every few months. Roblox changes often, and its help articles were updated in early November 2026. A quick look at the parental controls page after school holidays or a birthday keeps things matched to your child's age.

Parents also ask about Roblox

Is Roblox OK for a 7 year old?

It can be, with setup. Under-9s are placed in Roblox Kids, which only shows games rated Minimal or Mild that pass Roblox's selection, with chat off by default. Link a parent account, set a spending limit and stay nearby.

What age is Roblox rated in the UK?

PEGI rates Roblox Parental Guidance Recommended, with no number, because its content is user-made. The UK App Store lists it as 13+. Each game on Roblox also has its own maturity label, from Minimal to Restricted.

Can strangers talk to my child on Roblox?

Since January 2026, chat needs an age check and is limited to similar age groups, except Trusted Connections for 13+. Chat is off by default for under-9s. You can turn Experience chat and Direct chat off in parental controls.

How do I stop my child buying Robux?

Link a parent account and set a Monthly spending limit (it can be 0) with spending notifications. Also set purchase approval on the device or console, since Roblox's limit doesn't cover Xbox purchases or gift cards and stops applying at 13.

What are Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts?

Introduced globally in June 2026, Roblox Kids is for under-9s (milder, curated games, chat off by default). Roblox Select is for 9 to 15 (games up to Moderate). The account type follows the birthday on the account.

Does Roblox have loot boxes?

Many creator games sell paid random items, such as egg hatches or wheel spins, for Robux. Roblox requires creators to show the outcomes and odds before purchase. A monthly spending limit is the simplest way to cap it.
